VirtualDub won't read these formats. Anyone recommend software that can convert DivX, XviD and .mkvs to plain .avis?

XviD isn't a container, VirtualDub will read it just fine if you have the necessary VFW codec and the XviD stream's in an avi file. Try using AviSynth to handle other containers through DirectShow, then feed the avs to VirtualDub or whatever you like.

VirtualDubMod can handle Matroska, I believe. Check it out.

True, but VirtualDubMod hasn't seen an update in ages and its support for Matroska was never finished. It might work, though.

Hmm... VirtualDubMod loaded the .mkv file, but then it got a list of warnings. So it actually doesn't load.
