My VCR has retired to a half-assed video switch for my DVD player and cable since my TV is an ancient CRT with only an RF jack.

I do however own a few UFC VHS tapes, a weird Bruce Lee ripoff tape and the original Blair Witch VHS. I would have the Pet Semetary but my sister stole it from me, the bitch.

I wonder if use of the VHS will ever die out. It's funny how there's DVD players, blu-ray, and even portable DVD players then people still have a VHS.

I have a ton of stuff on VHS/S-VHS (old TV recordings, a lot of anime including some direct laserdisc recordings, and some regular movies including the letterboxed Faces box set edition of the original Star Wars trilogy) and 8mm/Hi8 (anime and home movies).  I still have two S-VHS VCRs in the house, both hooked up for occasional use.

VHS hi-fi was actually a very good and cheap analog audio recording solution, much better sound quality than audiocassettes, even if you used EP speed for 6-10.5 hours worth of audio.  (Helical tracking on a 1/2" tape vs. linear tracking on a very thin tape = more physical space for data.)  I used to copy rented CDs to them in the early '90s (before efficient psychoacoustic compression or inexpensive CD-R drives came along), then use that to master mix tapes for people.  I still have some of these VHS hi-fi audio recordings as well.

Although I like my DVR/DVD recorder just fine, there is also the impression that working with VHS is easier than working with a DVD recorder.  And it really is easier, since regular people don't have to worry about +/-/R/RW, finalization, menus, etc.

Finally, there are still plenty of applications for VHS in industrial settings.  Instructional and training materials in many fields often exist on VHS only, probably because the required duplication equipment is so cheap, common, and unsophisticated.

I like shooting VHS stuff on the screen using my cellphone. it creates a special effect i've used in two different videos. check out this one, Cardioporno, featuring Mary Hart and Cher. YES!

Durrr, you do know that there is software that emulates that effect don't you? Console emulators like snes9x take full advantage of this.

Btw, the video looks like shit. There's no "special effect" about it: anyone can tell by the scan lines and light reflection that you're just holding the camera infront of the tv. And get this: it's not cool. Become an hero.
