Video files?

I've got a problem:  When I play some mpegs or AVIs on WMP, every now and then I'll get a file that's like 1:20 (minute 20 seconds), but it'll actually have (if you scroll through it to other parts), like 10 min of footage, but it'll only play for 1:20's worth of time.

Is this a compression issue?  Is there a codec that'll play it right?
