It claims "Divx", but that can mean a lot of stuff. Anybody know what it specifically does/doesn't do?

No, I hate it because it's dirty and lowbrow.

Check the manufacturer's site for that model, but I would guess it just means you can burn divx encoded files to dvd and watch them. MP3/OGG/WMA CD playes and DVD players aren't all that uncommon these days, so I don't see why divx capable DVD players would be that uncommon, even at a low price.

Philips DVP642 and its replacement model can do everything this one can do, at the same price at Target or even cheaper elsewhere.  So can those Toshiba DVD/VCR combo units that go for only $80 at Best Buy, but with better MPEG-4 performance.

Don't expect compatibility with 3-point GMC or QPEL, so compatibility will be better with Divx than with Xvid.  Xvids and other MPEG-4 files without either feature enabled will work fine.

Since it was mentioned, Wal-Mart is a predatory retailer that is ultimately bad for the American economy.  Their SOP is to constantly stifle competition through undercutting alternative retailers on bait&switch loss-leaders that they advertise with the intent of pushing upgraded merch at non-competitive prices.  They ignore local labor laws where possible.  They apply pressure on goods manufacturers to move their production facilities out of the United States in order to keep up with Wal-Mart's volume pricicing demands.  Look up what they did to Vlasic (pickles) and, far worse, Rubbermaid (household wares).  These are just two examples of what they regularly do to big corporations; little guys stand no chance of getting out of bed with WM without the asspounding of their lives.  So enjoy your bag of candy that is 3 cents less than at the supermarket.  The savings does not offset the hidden costs.

Doesn't anybody remember DIVX?  They were those DVD type discs that you would buy for cheap, then you could only watch it a certain number of hours.  After that you had to pay a small fee to watch it again.

PS - Note that this type of DIVX is all capital letters, and if you look at the page title for that player at Walmart, DIVX is all caps there too.

You can probably get it for less on newegg.
What >>7 said is also true.

Okay, so is there anything that'll run normal stolen movies in xvid or a divx on a cdr? I wouldn't expect any of the wap formats like mkv, but just the normal theft is fine.
