Silent computer

Could anyone please round up a couple core components on the cheap for a very (hopefully completely) silent computer?  I'd like a roomy HDD, but other than that, I don't mind what is in it (no need for a beefy GPU, etc), as long as it isn't slow.  I plan on runnin' Linux on it!  Suggestions?

the only silent computer is a dead one

Truth. (for the most part)

Complete silence for modern components comes at a price. Solid state drives will be silent but hardly obtainable "on the cheap". And a roomy standard HDD will still make some level of noise. Only passively cooled components can be completely silent. If there are moving fan blades as in active cooling, there is noise; no matter how silent their manufacturer claims them to be.

I suggest you give up the notion of a building COMPLETELY silent computer on the cheap. You may achieve a relatively quiet system at a moderate price if you scale back core specs in favor of passive cooling. And don't forget a passively cooled PSU.

Lastly, "slow" is a relative term. Linux will run fine on even the most ancient machines. Get yourself a tiny distro, convert older hardware to passive cooling and you're golden.

Well, I have a thing about quiet PCs.  The one I'm on now is like a fucking vacuum.  I had the opportunity to see a friend's iMac (one of the newer ones) and, in comparison, it was pretty f'ing quiet.  Maybe not silent, but I couldn't tell if it was on or not, if I was in the same room.  That's all I want.  Maybe I could have heard the HDD if it was being accessed, or if I put my ear to it, or something.  Just a quiet computer.  I can hear mine, if I listen closely, anywhere in the house.  It sucks.

So Linux will run faster than Windows on the same specs?  All I'll be using it for is web browsing, IMing, and music, so hey, that works.

Thanks for everything so far, anonymous!

A system can become very quite by removing all fans and replacing them with water cooling (including psu fan) and then using a Seagate Barracuda hard drive which I can defintely say are the quitest hdds.

Get one of those desktop replacement laptops. They're not perfect, but they're the quietest you're going to get for cheap.

Or stick your comp in a soundproofed cabinet.
