Linux?

What's so great about it?

Linux is fine for nerds but Linux is *not* user friendly, and until it is linux will stay with >1% marketshare.

Take installation. Linux zealots are now saying "oh installing is so easy, just do apt-get install package or emerge package": Yes, because typing in "apt-get" or "emerge" makes so much more sense to new users than double-clicking an icon that says "setup".

Linux zealots are far too forgiving when judging the difficultly of Linux configuration issues and far too harsh when judging the difficulty of Windows configuration issues. Example comments:

User: "How do I get Quake 3 to run in Linux?"
Zealot: "Oh that's easy! If you have Redhat, you have to download quake_3_rh_8_i686_010203_glibc.bin, then do chmod +x on the file. Then you have to su to root, make sure you type export LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=2.2.5 but ONLY if you have that latest libc6 installed. If you don't, don't set that environment variable or the installer will dump core. Before you run the installer, make sure you have the GL drivers for X installed. Get them at [some obscure web address], chmod +x the binary, then run it, but make sure you have at least 10MB free in /tmp or the installer will dump core. After the installer is done, edit /etc/X11/XF86Config and add a section called "GL" and put "driver nv" in it. Make sure you have the latest version of X and Linux kernel 2.6 or else X will segfault when you start. OK, run the Quake 3 installer and make sure you set the proper group and setuid permissions on quake3.bin. If you want sound, look here [link to another obscure web site], which is a short HOWTO on how to get sound in Quake 3. That's all there is to it!"

User: "How do I get Quake 3 to run in Windows?"
Zealot: "Oh God, I had to install Quake 3 in Windoze for some lamer friend of mine! God, what a fucking mess! I put in the CD and it took about 3 minutes to copy everything, and then I had to reboot the fucking computer! Jesus Christ! What a retarded operating system!"

So, I guess the point I'm trying to make is that what seems easy and natural to Linux geeks is definitely not what regular people consider easy and natural. Hence, the preference towards Windows.

Ubuntu is easy enough for my grandmother to fucking use.

Ubuntu is easy enough for your grandmother to use because all she does is read her email and visit her church's website.

As much as you want to deny it, the "troll" presents a scenario I've seen plenty of times, even on the Ubuntu forums.

Name: Anonymous 2006-11-28 5:35

Oooohhh!!!  Does it run all the new games??    What do you mean 'no'??? Well fuck off then

Name: Anonymous 2006-11-28 6:35

Yes, the troll is old. So? I dont see any problem. I embraced my ancient kopipe long ago and I am happy together with my hand (which is suffering from rsi!). We have a fucking lot of material in and outside of the linux world and I am pretty good at creative thinking.

But thanks anyway asshole. Go and watch your stupid anime shit while I go FLAME some stupid idiot.

in a kind of dyslexic way perhaps, and your communication skills are close to zero.

For average users Linux is fine, they can install Minut Linux which is Ubuntu with Flash and all the propriety coedcs pre-installed, and they will be able to surf the web, view myspace and youtube and send emails and work on Office documents.  All that without getting any nasty viruses or spyware.

Linux is fine for everything except for:
1. software that "breaks the law" (patents - mp3, dmca - dvd css)
2. secret proprietary formats (ms word docs, wmv, macromedia director)
3. applications that rely on windows as a software platform (pretty much every computer game sold for personal computers, photoshop, cubase)
4. hardware manufacturers that don't release the relevant info needed for drivers (nvidia, ati)
5. any software that isn't located within the package management repositories.

I run linux and can play mp3s, dvds, wmvs etc.  I can open/edit/create .docs too.  Instead of photoshop use GIMP only real issue is 4,

1) Only in the US.  And even then, no one to my knowledge has gotten in trouble for possessing the software, only distributing it *with* a distro CD.  Installing the distro and getting it from their package manager?  No problem.
2) .doc is supported pretty well in OpenOffice and Abiword, and in the last few days, Microsoft has made it's new document formats an industry standard, meaning they've published full documentation and anyone will be able to support it (after reading over 6000 pages).  WMV9 has been fully, natively supported by FFMpeg for about 4 months (without the need for win32codecs).  Macromedia Director works in Wine, except for a specific saving error.
3) All my games run no problem in Wine/Cedega (including some newer titles).  The older ones don't even work in XP anymore (require 9X or 2K).  PS works in Wine (with a certain amount of work still), but Cubase does not. :(
4) This will change in time.  Even nVidia is considering joining Intel and open sourcing their drivers, but they're taking their sweet time.
5) ...is easy enough to add to them or compile by hand.  Shit, even my father figured out how to do a simple ./configure, make, make install.

Yeah, they did, five years ago.  Now Linux is pwning FreeBSD.  OpenBSD is still considered the king of security, though.

It's called a fucking codec. you can get stuff to work with the rest of the world. There's Wine if you need to run Windoze programs and you can just compile from source whatever else you need.
