My ZVM didn't come with an adapter. I do have an adapter that says 1.5 - 12v 300mA. The v is adjustable. The ZVM is supposed to take 5v. The switch lets me pick either 4.5 or 6v. If I use 4.5v will it be safe?

Wouldn't recommend doing it, it won't burn out anything like a voltage >5V, but the ZVM could act funny if it doesn't get a high enough voltage.

Always use the EXACT voltage and amps when it comes to finding a replacement adapter for electronics. Even a few milivolts and amps off can fry it.

True for the voltage, not for the amps.  The amp rating on an AC adapter is the max amperes it can source at the given voltage.    The OP could attach the ZVM to a 10000A adapter, as long as it was 5V.

Don't change these.
