So I just got myself a nice Maxtor drive 320GB sized... HOWEVER... I have a small problem, I can't seem to be able to access all the space :\
It says that the Total Space is 298GB... it should be 320... wtf?

WTF is right, this must be one of the most asked questions on the internets. Seriously. And some people give their HDD's bad reveiws for shit like that. Only time I'll ever answer this question on /tech.
1: HDD makers count as if 1GB = 1000MB instead of 1024MB.
2: Formatting creates a filesystem, which needs overhead.

All storage media have this, to some extent, though some (like CDs have more efficient filesystems than others. Even 1.44mb floppies are only 1.38mb when formatted w/ VFAT.
