What a waste of raid (and wouldn't it be raid 1 and not 5 if you want to double the capacity?)

No, it's RAID 0 (striped set w/o parity) for double capacity. RAID 1 is mirrored drives (same capacity as 1 drive, but you've got true redundancy).
