What makes a Dell PSU different from a standard PSU? People say the size is different, but it looks the same. Then I read that the problem is that the position of the power outlet and cooling fan is reversed, but couldn't you just make some cuts in your shell to accomodate that?
Because my Dell's PSU blew up, my only replacement options are here: http//www.pc/...
And I'd like a cheaper alternative (other than buying directly from Dell)

Best bet is just call dell or goto support.dell.com/chat
Most older Dell computers used propritary powersupplies, your SOL if you plan to buy from anyone else other than Dell. The actual wiring was different even if the connector was the same.
Newer Dells (+3yr but less than 5yrs) used standard server style powersupplies. (extra 4/5pin connector, not the 4pin ATX12v)
All Dells 2yrs or less use standard powersupplies.

The pins on the connector to the motherboard are in a different order than normal power supplies, the size is the same. Everything else is the same, I have an article in a magazine that shows you the picture comparing dell to a normal one but its in the attic and cbf getting it out.. maybe google can help you

If it's under warranty:
The easiest thing to do is to call Dell and get a replacement shipped to you.
If it isn't under warranty:
You can purchase any power supply that is rated to work with your computer. Pay special attention to what watt your dell power supply is rated for. (ie 250watt, 350watt, etc). You will need to make sure your power supply can produce enough watt to power your motherboard/computer.
As long as you can plug your power supply into your motherboard, you should be fine. Since all power supply have standard connectors, you should be fine. There is no need to find a special Dell branded replacement.

Thanks for the help. I went to the Dell forums for help. My warranty's out, so I'll have to buy a new PSU. Most Dell shells have the power plug and cooling fan reversed, but my specific shell doesn't. So I can buy a standard ATX 24-pin that'll fit right in. Thanks for the responses!
