this may sound retarded, but do i need a HD reciever AND a HD DVD/blu-ray player to play movies on my HD-ready tv? or is the HD DVD player the only thing needed?

You only need the tv. And make sure it has the proper inputs, whether it be DVI or HDMI.

HD receiver? If you mean receiver as in the audio-hardware then HD refers to the video-resolution, being either 720 or 1080 lines. It's got nothing to do with audio. So no, you won't need a HD receiver because there is no such thing. Unless of course you're referring to a satelite receiver, in which case you will indeed need a HD receiver if you intend to watch TV channels that broadcast in HD-resolutions.
If you do get a HD sat-receiver then be aware of that a lot of the ones on the market now use mpeg2 and while that is nice and everything most channels will switch to mpeg4 relatively soon if they haven't already, something which will render all the mpeg2-receivers completely useless. Make sure you get a mpeg4-compatible one.
