Hi I want a surround sound system but all the sets I see are with a dvd player I already have a dvd player is it possible to just but boxes and a woofer and such and hook it up to the player I have ?

probably. I don't know a whole lot about it but I know that you wanna make sure your dvd player has the right outputs. The yellow cable runs from the dvd player to the TV's video in and then you'll either have digital out or just the standard white/red which should lead back to the woofer or wherever. Ugh in my mind its clear but what I just said was pretty vague. Sorry I can't help more - just go to a circuit city and ask the guys there (maybe bring a digital camera with a photo of the back of ur DVD player).
