I have some IC's and an LCD display, I was hoping to make a display that ran on one of the serial ports in my machine.
I'm not sure what IC's I'll need but I was hoping it could just use a shift register to read in a byte at a time from the computer and use the value in the shift register to drive the LED display.
The things I don't know is if it's even possible. I don't know if the serial port uses some protocol or if I can output straight bytes. Also, I read that the serial port output on +/- 23 to 3 V so I'll need a chip to convert back to CMOS levels right?
Any and all help is appreciated. I'm am eventually going to be a computer engineer but unfortunately I haven't had any microcomputer interfacing courses yet.
