Connecting a Verizon cell phone to a computer

I have a Motorola E815 with Verizon and the Motorola software/USB data cable that I bought does not work with it. I've been reading around and it appears that Verizon locks out their phones so that you can't just hook them up to a PC. Do they sell their own software to do this or what?
