Playing Import Games on PS2

I wish to play vib-Ribbon on my PS2 and in since I have an NA PS2, I have no idea how to go about doing that.

Do I need a modchip or is there some sort of freeplay disc I can get(similar to the one for Gamecube). Yes, I fail, but I'm new to this kind of thing and I REALLY want to play vib-Ribbon.

I heard it wasn't quite region free, but rather America and Japan will have the same region coding.
