my damned PS2 quit playing GT4

So, I was playing GT4 no issues up until yesterday.

then all of a sudden it won't play music while racing, and it gives a red load screen after the race and won't ever load the replay.

Do I need to purchase a new PS2 (they are only, what, $150?) or can I upgrade the memory in my old school PS2?  Or just sell the old school one on eBay for the modders?

could be the cd is scratched and will not work anymore.

ps2 messes up cds in vertical position with the scratching and the hey hey whats going on.
