Dear /g/,

This is currently my phone (http://www.digital-hwy.com/images/phones/i205.gif). It is a brick. My service is Nextel (can't switch because my mom/her work pays for it). Is there any way I can get a normal sized phone that actually feels like it's from the modern day for less than $70 (because Nextel fails at having good phones for a decent price)? Can I use a Sprint phone or something? Any other suggestions?

You might be able to get a cheap phone if you are williing to sign a one year contract but if the phone or the reception sucks, it's your loss.

All phone companies have downs. Like verizon, they have decent phones, but their service is hella pricey.

You can get a new phone by renewing your contract for another n number of years... but... AAAH! I would NEVER again go back to Nextel. It sucks miserably.

I got VERY used to putting the phone in trace mode --

... to determine which site it was connected to and the signal quality, then wandering around a bit until it was NOT connected to any of the nearby base sites that seemed to work but have no connectivity to the outside world...

Also, when in trace mode, you can view the current operating frequency. Notice how it isn't within any of the standard cellular bands (800-825; 875-900, 1.7 Ghz...)? This is why you can't use just any phone with Nextel service. I think the newest Nextel/Sprint (Sextel!) phones are actually CDMA on Sprint's network, though... I wouldn't mind seeing all that old Nextel network crap sold off for scrap metal.

Currently, I've got an old i88s I use only as a GPS reciever. It no longer works on Nextel's network; they did something weird to it over the air when we discontinued service. I'd say that's an ok phone model, though it's a bit dated now.

Don't change these.
