I accidentaly deseble my exernal HD (firewire connected), which I use as backup of all my stuff (hentai included) during the reinstallation of WinXP, because the installation prompt saw it as a partition D:// and I did not recognize it!!!
But the system did not start a format process, it only shows no more the external HD identity. I try to recreate the partition fron the same point but it shows me now all the 39,994 Gigas of its 40s.
Is there a chance to have the files, folders, ecc saved and back them up???
What software do I have to use? I tried with Disk Director 9.0
Please help if there's anything possible.
Thank you very much

fdisk
Use with caution. If all that's wrong is the ID, that can fix it. But it can also trash it. If that won't work, those linux boot disks work wonders if you know what you're doing.
You're probably better off with an automated tool.

fdisk /mbr
/mbr is an undocumented option that M$ only tells OEMs about. It rebuilds the drive's master boot record. Theoretically, anyway.

fdisk /mbr is undocumented?

Yes, because it can do more harm than good if used carelessly. There are also the fixboot and fixmbr commands in the Windows recovery console, which is a little less lary than just wading in there with fdisk. Basically, if all else has failed and you've got nothing else to lose, then is the time to start playing with fdisk.
