American football shouldn't be named like that cuz the ball it's rarely touched with the foot and it looks more like rugby than football. shouldn't be called something like american rugby instead of soccer?

Well the ball is kicked a number of times in American football during kickoffs and punts as well as extra point attempts. So the name is not entirely without reason.

i always thought it was named so because the ball was a foot long.

I'm sure the Stonecutters have something to do with it. same reason why the U.S. doesn't use the metric system.

Football or Soccer? - In the 1880's, Oxford University students used slang which involved adding an "er" to the end of words they had deliberately shortened.
"Rugger," was slang for Rugby Football.
A student, named Charles Wreford Brown, was asked if he liked to play rugger.
'No soccer!' Was his witty reply.
He had shortened asSOCiation (football) and added "er."
The term was coined!

I think the name for American Football should be Gridiron. Sounds tough.
