In a way life is humanity, we are life .we just named our self humans to classify our self as a specie. We are a part of it, occasionally we get a little arrogant and say we are supreme above all life, but life has a funny way for reminding us that it's humble. The loss of self is in way a mistake, but mistakes are a beautiful way of learning. And as long we don't see our self being a whole different entity that life, we will live on
