Abstract

Human ethnocentrism—the tendency to view one's group as centrally important and superior to other groups—creates intergroup bias that fuels prejudice, xenophobia, and intergroup violence. Grounded in the idea that ethnocentrism also facilitates within-group trust, cooperation, and coordination, we conjecture that ethnocentrism may be modulated by brain oxytocin, a peptide shown to promote cooperation among in-group members. In double-blind, placebo-controlled designs, males self-administered oxytocin or placebo and privately performed computer-guided tasks to gauge different manifestations of ethnocentric in-group favoritism as well as out-group derogation. Experiments 1 and 2 used the Implicit Association Test to assess in-group favoritism and out-group derogation. Experiment 3 used the infrahumanization task to assess the extent to which humans ascribe secondary, uniquely human emotions to their in-group and to an out-group. Experiments 4 and 5 confronted participants with the option to save the life of a larger collective by sacrificing one individual, nominated as in-group or as out-group. Results show that oxytocin creates intergroup bias because oxytocin motivates in-group favoritism and, to a lesser extent, out-group derogation. These findings call into question the view of oxytocin as an indiscriminate “love drug” or “cuddle chemical” and suggest that oxytocin has a role in the emergence of intergroup conflict and violence.

I dunno, in my extensive experience it seems less like a need to see one's group as superior and more like a need to see one's group as significant in a non relative manner. 

The need for superiority seems to be psychological projection: It comes about as a reaction to the implication that your group is inferior.

This research comes from the netherlands, a country that in the last decade has become known for the prevalence of white-supremacist sentiments among its population, a product of the high ratio of non-white immigrants/to native dutch citizens. Thus, the research was conducted on a population of people that are atypically predisposed towards identifying their ingroup along racial lines. If they were not so, it is very possible that results of this study would have been different--See http://www.pnas.org/content/98/26/15387.short for an explanation.

More importantly, two facts are already known: 1)people have racist tendencies 2)people's behavior and 'sentiments' come from the brain. So, to find something correlating the two is unimpressive. Of course, some neonazis have gone and tried to say that this proves that racism is hardwired into the brain and into our perception of ingroups and outgroups. But that is not at all proven by the study.

Most importantly, despite the fact that racism is probly hardwired to some degree--albeit likely in a way that is less profound or binding than the degenerates would have you believe--the point is that most enlightened people would like to overcome racism. We live in an increasingly globalized world of scarce resources, where the large majority of people of all ethnicities stand to gain more (in wealth, security, technology etc.) from cooperation and friendly competition than they do from the destructive competition of racism.

Personally though, sometimes I really just think that the degenerate fuckwad neanderthals who can't overcome their base human urges (ie racists) should be treated like the animals they are and stripped of their membership in society. But that would be unproductive, like racism.

Well, my answer to your question would be "who cares?" Who cares what anyone has to say. It is your life, and your decision.. They are not the ones living through what you are so don't worry about what they think. I am a caucasian woman, and my fiancee' is from Rwanda, Africa, and I happen to be 33 weeks pregnant with our son.
