It's how you make sperms and eggs. We normally have double quantity (diploid) chromosomes per cell nucleus, but the gamete cells (sperms and eggs) have the half quantity (haploid) chromosomes. Ordinary mitosis does not change the number of chromosomes per cell, so you need some fucked out process to get haploids. Some plants do this "altnernation of generations" thing with haploid and diploid forms more elaborately than we do.

Anyway, ha- sounds like half, so that's how I remember, but really it derives from a Greek word for one.
