most acids will corrode metals and minerals but not polymers. acids are highly ionized and react to form neutral soluble salts with metals/minerals. the energy required to break the ionic or metallic bonds is much lower than the energy required to break a covalent carbon-carbon bond.
water can eat through metals/minerals, its just a matter of rate.
