Have their been any legitimate applications of theoretical physics?

As far as string theory is concerned, no. But remember that nuclear energy and nuclear weapons and stuff were derived from theoretical physics. Someone, somewhere will find a use for it eventually.

One thing is for sure do not use a string to stretch you penis to make it bigger.
