But there'd be nothing to stop you from having sex with yourself.
And, in terms of genetic variation, that's twice as bad as incest.

But plants and some sealife do it all the time. Though they are far less complex.

Assuming haploid gametes and diploid zygotes, one could imagine a situation in which there is only one kind of reproductive organ/gamete. Upon mating, both unisex organisms receive the other's gametes. However, the gametes themselves contain some sort of MHC-like molecule that will distinguish self-gametes from non-self gametes. Thus, two-self gametes could not come together in the womb to form a zygote, whereas two non-self zygotes could.

also hormones don't interact well with one another. but that comes after the evolutionary and reproductive arguments mentioned in this thread.
If we are cursed with knowledge, it would be that of "the awareness of the presence of the absence of a thing."
The Tao represents this concept very well within the instabilities of our experiential awareness.
This is the Law of Dissonance.
Everyone has it, but most people cover it up with an assumption or preconception in order to hide the vulnerability of ignorance.
But because they know this, they know...and are silent.
Our awareness of the presence of the absence of a thing is what causes vulnerability and from not exploring experimentally through experience outside the mind as well as inside the mind, there is a tender minuscule fig leaf covering this gap in knowledge and ego is very very very eager to defend this fig leaf with its torrent of fury.
Simple enough for ya? :/

A hell of a lot of reasons. We are not plants and sealife. We are social, conscious, weak, intelligent mammals. Stop talking bullshit. These are questions a 5 year old will ask; maybe.
