I don't get the pythagorean theorem

How does it work ?
How do you find the value of one of the legs of a triangle?
I know that The legs squared (a squared + b squared = C squared, where C is the hypotenuse) but how do you find the value of a leg if you have the value of a hypotenuse and a leg ?

how old are you, 12?

c^2 - a^2 = b^2
 
If
you have A^2 (known leg value) + b^2 (unknown leg value) = C^2 (known hypotenuse value)

Then
Subtract A^2 from both sides of equal sign

Congratulations, you have now passed 10th grade mathematics

A helpful hint to the master all mathematics up to here?

1/2 = x/10

Cross-multiplication

(1*10)/2 = 5
x=5

You now have the simple means for finding out ratios and scale.

This will help you all the way up to 10th grade math.

Now get yourself a TI-?? calculator and start programming this shit out, keep equations and how to's on paper for back-up reference, and make your life easier...that's what I did and I got A+'s four years in a row.

It's just basic algebra, OP.

Remember when you have an equality, you can do any operation to one side, and as long as you do the exact same operation to the other side, then you still have an equality.

Of course these operations have to be well defined on both sides, but there are no issues with that in your example (your variables are just numbers, so subtracting and finding square roots is a-ok).

Just take your original equality, subtract a^2 from both sides to get a new equality. Then find the square root of both sides and you'll be left with an an equation for b. Then just plug in the values of the "legs" you know, and calculate.

Actually, I'm 13. We're learning this in grade 8/9 math, a fusion of grade 8 and 9 math into integrated into one course.
