Help with formula

Name: Bob 2010-02-24 7:17

Hi. I'm a year ten who goes to a pretty lousy school in Australia. I was just wondering what the formula/e of algebra is. I can only work out the answes using the process of elimination, but I still can't work some things out. I want the formulae to things such as 2x+6=69, 6x+-3=2x+1 (I know this might not make sense, but it's just an example), 2x-(2+3)=92, (2x+3)--5=5+2-(3x-2). I hope this all makes sense. Thanks, /sci/

What do you mean with the formula of algebra? You want to find x in 2x + 6 = 69 ?

Yeah. Sorry for not defining that.

Well you just have to do basic aritmetic operations on both sides of your equations until you have isolated the x. Let a, b and c be real given numbers and x be the variable that you want to find.

ax + b = c \qquad \left.\right\|-b

ax = c - b \qquad \left.\right\| \cdot\frac{1}{a}

x = \frac{c-b}{a}

it's really simple. It will get a bit more complicated once you try to solve systems with more than just one unknown, such as:

"Ashley is four times older than Bryan. Next year however she will only be three times older than him. How old are those two?"

seems like you're asking for a basic tutorial on solving simple algebra. I would be happy to help and try to teach you.

If you're interested, reply here and we'll start on yahoo or msn messenger.

If you suck at basic algebra, just approach the task at a different angle.
If "2x+6=69" simply doesn't make sense to you, think of it this way:

Which number (represented by 'x') is such that when you double that number and add six, you get 69?
Well, necessarily, that number must also be such that when you just double it, you get 69 minus 6, which is 63.
So which number is such that when it's doubled, it's 63? Obviously, that's one half of 63, which is 31.5.
To test this: 2x+6=69 => 2*31.5+6=69 => 63+6=69.

Don't change these.
