"laziness"

Hello /sci/,
Could you explain to me why people are willing to go out of their way "to be lazy".
Examples:
  Walking an extra 20 feet to the automatic door instead of pushing open the other door.
  Waiting an additional 5 minutes instead of going up a flight of stairs.
I'm sure you've observed others. Is it just a habit people get into? Has there ever been a study into this.

Lol, you think I only say things here on this thread? Are you nuts? I say things to you all the time...when you're awake, when you're asleep, when you are paying attention to what you think are your thoughts, and when you are ignoring me and perceiving something else. Sometimes you obey me, sometimes you don't. Free-Will, it is a bitch. Ah, but like butterfly wings, once touched...they never quite get off the ground again.

On a side-note;
Is hearing the same as listening? If so, why two distinctly different words? Perhaps it's not what these words have in common, but what makes them unique? :3
