i am on your side but there are exceptions to what you are saying also. neutrons do not sit there because they are inert, according to theory gluons keep quarks together. a proton consists of uud and a neutron is udd. there is a constant interaction between their color charges of these particles. that is what keeps them together. also electric charge is not that simple either, W+,W- or Wo bosons carry the electrical charge and create the repelling or attractive forces between particles.
