Is it realistic?

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-01 7:36

Lol, why wouldn't it be?

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-01 8:02

What do you mean realistic?  They do experiments and verify stuff.  They aren't completely rigorous, because that would be boring and it's a TV show, but they do legitimately prove/disprove plenty of myths.  For example they did the myth about dipping your hand in hot lead without getting burned, and they dipped their hands in hot lead without getting burned.  Can't really argue with that.

sounds like a lot of fun...here, let me try that.....AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

They mostly test physics. Ever heard about the guys that measured the speed at wich penguins got rid of their shit? At first your like "Wtf's the point of all this?". Later, after you've put a little thought into it, you see that the interesting part is how the evolutionary process might have looked that finally led to their awezum shitting speeds.

TL:DR

There's more behind their testing than meets the eye.(I don't know if that saying even exists in english but you should get the picture of what I'm trying to explain.)

no it's just a show, don't take it as actual science

I think you guys seriously need to read http://xkcd.com/397/ . Rigor is not the core property of science, and it isn't even the really important part.

What's rigor?

Name: Anonymous 2010-01-03 8:12

>>12
it means that you dont just do one experiment and say "well there we go that's proven!"

Actually, a single experiment can well be all it takes to prove that something is possible.

In practice, the type of propositions which we want to test usually require not testing an experiment once, but many times, so we can have more faith in our results.

Often, but far from always. When I want to find out "could X reasonably have happened?", and I try a single time - successfully - to make X happen, I have perfect faith that X could in fact reasonably have happened.

Of course, had my attempt not succeeded, I would hardly have gained any faith at all that it could NOT reasonably have happened.
