So, what useful, free computer programs are out there for science undergrads -that you would recommend?
I have been very happy with:
* ImageJ - for editing, viewing and merging images, especially fluorescence microscopy data (immunohistochemistry staining)
* Abiword - writing
* past.exe - simple exploratory statistics and diversity analysis: folk.uio.no/ohammer/past/download.html
* Google Scholar: often links to free pdfs of papers on author homepages
p.s.: easy cheap textbook intro in biology-oriented statistics:
"Asking questions in biology" (very cool book but it is a little lightweight on experimental design)

fuckin matlab. a lot of universities have a site license so you can get it for free instead of for eighty thousand dollars or whatever ridiculous amount it usually costs.

Failing matlab, you can get the freeware 'clone' Octave, which has most of the functionality that any undergrad should need for a calc/linear algebra/physics/etc course or degree.

MiKTeX + WinEdt combo for typing shit up.
I use Maple and Mathematica a lot. I'm going to try MATLAB since it seems more popular. Yeah I know, these aren't free, but I sure didn't pay for them.

>I use Maple and Mathematica a lot.
Maple sucks balls.
Also, Sage is free and has much more advanced functionality than mathematica, but less of the "basic" stuff that mathematica does have.
>I'm going to try MATLAB since it seems more popular.
Don't bother.
>Yeah I know, these aren't free, but I sure didn't pay for them.

Try Chemsketch, awesome for drawing organic molecules. There is a free version.
zotero is indeed very useful - but firefox only?
a fine starting resource that i can recommend is "DNA from the beginning"
Information and pictures about classical genetics, molecules of genetics, and genetic organization and control. www.dnaftb.org
and the rcsb protein database: www.pdb.org
PLOS one is a free interesting biology journal.
