cold fusion (proper designation LENR, low energy nuclear reactions)
dead tech? total hoax? untapped goldmine? already working on it?
keep in mind it's hard to call it a total hoax anymore. Numerous documented and published observations of Neutron-potmarked plastic among other signs of fusion

Current standard theory is the electrolysis process creates ultra-low-energy neutrons. These neutrons have an effective fusing radius of ginormous, so they immediately fuse with something.
maybe some kind of neutron emitter would help things along? shit if i know.
Anyway, oil company killed or bribed anyone who was close to creating the technology. They've actually had far more efficient renewable tech for years, but are smart enough to realize that it would threaten their multi-TRILLION dollar business. So they're going to exploit oil as long as possible, and when it's gone, they'll just dig through those decade-old tech they've been hiding in their basements and market something "new" that they still have total control over.
Abundance is the enemy of profit and the enemy of capitalism. every current energy provider renewable to oil has a vested interest in never letting fusion see the light of day.
