are you fucking kidding me?
It's an automatic response brought on by lack of oxygen in the brain and/or muscles.
So, whatever part of the brain regulates that, most likely the mammalian brain (madula, hippo, etc) is responsible for this response to occur.
Evolutionary advantage? More oxygen for the body/brain, better chance of survival! DUH!
i was just gonna bring that shit up with a, "YEAH AND WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT CONTAGIOUS YAWNING SHIT ALL ABOUT?"
now i suppose i'll just read the article.

srsly, this is the dumbest question I've ever had to displeasure of thinking about...okay, when you see someone yawning, your mind knows INSTINCTIVELY what yawning accomplishes and in this perception begins the transition to WANT more of the feeling that comes from gaining more oxygen from yawning for muscles...but ALSO the brain! It's like knowing that hunger has happened in the past, you're not currently hungry but you haven't eaten in a while...suddenly you see someone eating and then the smell hits you and your mouth starts watering and you are suddenly hungry.
It's the same process for a different function that requires fulfilling.
Now, let me get some sleep, damn it! :<

your brain desires rest when you are tired and coincidentally also generally desires more oxygen at this time.
yeah, even a yawn makes a significant difference in how much oxygen your brain has to work with, contrary to popular belief.
well, if you believed contrary to that, anyway.
but that synchronizing sleep times thing is interesting, perhaps that is another function evolution has built onto it.
