Science is only oh-so-many steps along an untraveled path mapping it's way along as it goes. The problem with science? "When the ground doesn't match the map; change the map." Sometimes things change and science has to move to compensate for the change. Science is only a mathematical mapping system; nothing more. To give it more meaning than this is to idolize it beyond itself. Much like hovering around a computer which is only an over-glorified calculator. And if this statement makes you upset, you may want to re-evaluate your priorities.
