History

Hey /sci/entists , this fits your board best, though it fits no board in particular. How do you guys like history? I'm not a text board person. I have an extremely pseudo-intellectual friend (thinks she's hot shit, but her need to always one up people frustrates me to no end) who's taking a class in history right now, and I was talking to another friend about how the Dark Ages were called what they were for the huge dearth of knowledge and stuff. She overhears and goes off on me and lists a half dozen works of literature and things made during the time period before I can get a word in sideways. I'm trying to prove to her that the Dark Ages were indeed a shit-hole. Can you help me out? My best bet right now is using Petrarch by talking about how he did things for pleasure, and how that being a breakthrough shows the stagnation in thought since the fall of the roman empire, also, the impact that the reconquering of Spain had when we got all of that knowledge from the moors proves just how stupid we were. Help?

The Dark Ages were like feudal Japan only full of awesome kings who kicked mythological ass all the time!

Why do people always use the phrase "since the fall of the Roman Empire" when talking about knowledge of science etc..? Everyone knows the Romans were generally lazy bastards who were too busy eating grapes and plagiarising Greeks and Persians to come up with anything useful.
