So i just finished my vector calc homework

It's currently 2:45 and I started at about 12:00, we're covering parametrization of surfaces.  Half of the questions we simply applications of formula, but the other half were a bit more complicated.  In order to use the formula you first had to parametrize a some surface.  Obviously there were easy ones like spheres and ellipsoids but the harder ones consisted of surfaces within surfaces, such as a plane inside of a cylinder or a paraboloid inside a cylinder.

When solving these problems it seemed to me like I was just hoping for a coincidence to occur.  Such as I had to parametrize the part of the plane inside a cylinder, which forms an ellipse.  I then was able to use the parametrization of an ellipse to get the answer.  Similarly, I had to find the surface area of the part of the paraboloid of the form x= f(y,x) inside the cylinder z^2 + y^2 = C, obviously the fact that both the paraboloid and cylinder revolved about the x-axis made the problem much easier, probably easier than the plane-cylinder problem since all I had to for this one was copy the parametrization of a paraboloid and restrict the domain of the parameters.

All in all it was the type of assignment I hate.  There are hundreds of potential ways two simple surfaces an intersect and there's really no way to study for them for an exam, so studying is essentially useless.  Also, even if you study of hours if you don't get the "trick" behind these questions there really is no way of solving these in time.  So basically the problem is that these question rely too heavily on the geometry behind the equations instead of manipulating the equations themselves.  It reminds me of my Multivariate Calculus class where I left a question blank on the final: find the area or surface area of the intersection of two cylinders.  I answered every other question and I had a good 45 minutes to answer that one but I couldn't for the life of me figure out the trick behind it.  After the final I heard two classmates talking about and one told the other that she just memorized the procedure.  That's not what math is about, computers can do that, math should be about proofs and derivations, not who can memorize the most.

But the worst part about this assignment is that my roommate has been SNEEZING THIS WHOLE TIME AND ITS DRIVING ME INSANE

You could have summarised ur story in those 2 lines.

Yes, thats life. I used to think that. But even though ideally math shouldn't be about memorising something from the book, people will always complain when there is no way they could ahve studied like an asian untill you can do it. School is about being able to make it through hard work, its not about who's lucky to be born with so much intelligence that he doesn't ahve to work that hard to get math problems right.

I cant remember what the train of thought was, but

ahh fuck it

Yeah, geometry's hard, especially since American education fails so hard (you learn less).  They teach decent algebra, but they really make geometry too easy.

OP here, I go to UBC, half of my class is asian, more than half in my higher level science classes, and I get above average marks, sometimes A's sometimes B's.  So yes, I can study "like an asian" in fact I can study with the best of the asians.

it's called critical thinking. its not about guessing what the right parametrization is, but understanding what to look for and what something should look like and why.

professors call it intuition, but i think its the same thing.

people memorize shit when they dont care about understanding it, they just want to pass a class. it all depends on if you plan on using your education in the future.

Asian (Indian) here. OP, some constructive criticism: learn to learn. There's nothing wrong in rote memorization as long as the concept is learnt.

Fact of the matter is that concessions are made all over the place to the ideal of math (i.e. your view that "math should be about proofs and derivations, not who can memorize the most") and other subjects. A student could argue that giving timed exams detracts from the ideal of math, but such an argument would be fruitless since exams are a necessity.

Man, I wish my weekly hw took only 3 hours to do...

Dude, if I had to spend three hours a week outside of class on all my classes COMBINED, I'd fucking drop out.

Name: Anonymous 2009-03-21 22:47

Yeah it only took three hours because im smart

My math homwok take only 30 minute to do every week so i am smartest, clearly.

Asian (Indian) here.
you're not Asian

I have homework due soon that's part of my final grade. It looks hard as fuck, I haven't started yet and probably won't even hand it in. The past 6 months has burned me out too much and I just don't give a fuck anymore. I'm taking my holidays early.

Rote learning is the fail way to learn. It's akin to artificial intelligence. In others words something that only has the appearance of being intelligent but is not necessarily intelligent.

OP, as far as mathematics though, one needs to embrace the geometry aspect as well or they are only half a mathematician. If you understand the geometry behind the maths then this stuff should all be common sense to you.

Name: Anonymous 2009-03-24 15:50

Maths isn't about manipulating equations. If that's all you can do then you're just as much of a robot as they are for memorising techniques.

lol how are they like robots for their memorizing techniques?

Don't change these.
