Need help to get better at Math

Name: Anonymous 2009-03-14 23:00

Hey there /sci/,

This being my first time lurking /sci/, I decided to post the question:

How do I get better at Math?

I'm currently a sophomore in college and declared myself as a Math major.  I'm taking Number Theory as well as Calculus 2 at the moment (I had to take Pre-calc 1st semester Freshmen year, and Calc 1 2nd semester but this was not the same Calculus for math majors, so I had to retake Calc 1 last semester).

While I find Calculus to be a bit more understandable, Number Theory is just getting ridiculous, as it requires me to take several hours, and at times with study groups, to do my homework assignments.

I was wondering if there were any way that I could emerge myself more in the math community so that I can learn to think more like a Mathmatician.

For now, eat, breathe, and sleep math.

When you gain some more aptitude, start reading research papers and talking to professors/doing shit for them.

Though, I must ask, why are you a math major, having taken Precalc as a college freshman. I took that during the summer after my hs freshman year and I had no intention of doing math (chose engineering).

Wrong.  The correct answer is, if you do not ALREADY do these things naturally and voluntarily, then you are not meant to be a mathematician.

Change majors.  Noone *chooses* to be a mathematician, they are born into it.  GET OUT WHILE YOU STILL CAN. :O

Oh shit, this is so true. Unless you train your mind for countless, painful, years just to be up to par with the fucking rain men that have numbers flying across their brains everyday, I would also suggest you get out while you still can.

I didn't have the opportunity to take higher level math courses in high school because the high school I attended was a charter school that had just started off for hispanics.  So they didn't offer any advanced courses, or even pre calculus.

I know that I'm a bit behind, but I'm willing to put in a lot of effort to get my career off the ground.  I'm striving to become an Actuary.

The guy didn't say he wanted to be a mathematician. You don't need to be fucking rain man to get a decent math degree.

OP,

Don't listen to any of these fucks. Work hard and do your best. While it may be true that some people are more naturally apt in mathematics, that doesn't mean you are completely fucked if you don't "think like a mathematician". You might completely fail and have to change majors. That's perfectly ok. The only way you'll know for sure math is ummm... "right" for you is if you try.

You guys are faggots.
Math major here, yeah I know some 'rain men'.
But they are not typically the ones who get the high end jobs. You need to be good at marketing yourself and your resume in almost any competitive industry, aka practical knowledge.
Math major isn't actually that hard. You need to have trained yourself to get into the mindset for doing math and you need to have exercised your ability for abstract logic. But, from what my friends do, I'd judge it about on par with physics in difficulty.
There is no math that is completely beyond most people, some people will just need to put a bit more time and effort into it if their strength does not lie in that area.
