I'm a senior in math, and recently, I was informed of a private tutoring opportunity for a local high school kid who needed helped with calculus. I've volunteered in the university's own tutoring lab that helps freshmen students with basic and advanced algebra, so I have some tutoring experience. The question is what are the usual rates for a private math tutor? I had originally thought of charging $10/hour and then decided on $15/hour.
Does anyone have any tips? What are the usual rates you've heard?

It's all about supply and demand.
A H.S. student doesn't have access to the same resources that the university has, so he has to pay for a tutor instead of getting free tutoring like you can at the lab. There will be less (but probably still plenty) calc tutors available than there are for lower level stuff.
Also, you have to factor in if the kid's parents have money. If his parents are considering hiring a private tutor for him, I'd guess they aren't exactly poor, so they probably wouldn't squirm too much if you asked for something a bit higher.
In the end, you have to look at the competition. Unless there's something that makes you a better tutor than everyone else, you have to set your rates by what other tutors in your area charge.
