It depends on the environment. If one were to make bodily contact with a female in public, the "atmosphere", as poets call it, would at first become terse and unreal, settling down as your heart begins to beat rapidly. Usually these feelings are quickly accompanied by contentment, molding into increased affection, cultivating euphoria. In almost any case, unless you are emotionally cold, or homosexual, manipulative or generally insincere, these feelings will not soon abjure, if they do at all. Although the female in question may have executed the hug or prolonged embrace as a routine gesture and will thus not take it so seriously, the one hugged most likely takes the act to mean that she has a deeper liking for him, which transcends the casual.
If the environment is more private, for example within the confines of a residentiality, there are added considerations concerning the embrace. At the euphoric stage of a hug, the couple may elevate to higher level romantic activities, such as kissing, fellatio, and possibly sexual engagement.
I personally don't know what it's like to hold a girl though. I'm too cold hearted to care.

When you hold a girl, realize that you are holding a living human being in your arms, unless she is dead (that's different). You must be gentle and flexible otherwise your rigidity can hurt her in subtle ways, use her expressions to guide you through this. When you finally find the right way to hold a (living) girl; you will find out how to hold any girl. It's relatively easy to figure it out, it's absolutely not the same with every girl. Every encounter is different, even with the same (living girl).
For those cases where you are holding a dead girl...well, I can't say for sure; just remember to consider rigor mortise, tissue breakdown, and sudden bladder and rectal discharges. Sometimes things like that can BLOW up in your face. :P
