What the hell is this asking?

Name: Anonymous 2008-11-19 3:16

The difference in the place value of the digit 4 in the number 834041 is?  There are 2 digit 4's?!?

Name: Anonymous 2008-11-19 4:42

Place value = xyz where x is place 1 (hundreds), y is place 2 (tens), z is place 3 (ones). The difference in place value of x and z is 2 because they are 2 places apart. Likewise, the difference between x and y is 1, and the difference between y and z is 2.

So, the difference in place value between the two 4's in the number 834041 is 2, because they are 2 places apart from each other.

Er, difference between y and z is 1*

Name: Anonymous 2008-11-19 4:44

Also the first 4 is in the thousandths place and the second 4 is in the tens place. What the hell grade are you in?

4000 - 41 = 3960

Name: Anonymous 2008-11-19 10:25

First grade was awesome.

4000 - 41 =/= 3960, recheck your math

Name: Anonymous 2008-11-20 0:53

It's asking for the DIFFERENCE in the place value of the digit 4.
so you will need to values for there to be a difference, right?
you have two '4's! what a fucking coincidence!
4000 - 40 = 3960
and wowe that's one of the choices too!
not to mention with these MC problems you know that when you see multiple similar answers (3960 or 396), (unless the answer you come to is one of the other ones obviously) one of those is probably bound to be the correct answer because the other is there to trick you. Just a little tip for your future in MC questions.
in the question they obviously meant digits, not digit, it's probably a typo. And if you couldn't figure that out it's probably time you drop out of the first grade.

This is the correct answer.

Jesus fucking Christ OP, are you in the 3th grade?

before you faggots even say a thing, I meant to hit the "4" button

bwahahahahahahahahahahaahahahah!

Stupid fucking 3th grader hit the wrong button!

Good job buddy. You managed to hide your stupidity by capitalizing on my mistake. This completely nullifies the fact that you are so dumb, you couldn't even understand elementary level mathematics. Would you like us to help you memorize your multiplication tables too? Or maybe the order of operations?

Name: Anonymous 2008-11-21 22:16

This guy is a fucking obvious troll. I can't believe you fell for it.

Name: sage 2008-11-22 1:14

This place is fucking terrible.

Order of operations is pretty lame, since we usually use () to remove ambiguity anyway.  Stuff like 2^3x generally mean 2^(3x), rather than the 8x that PEMDA suggests.

Name: Anonymous 2008-11-22 3:51

>>17

Yeah but we would only do that to tell calculators how to compute or if we can't right it out properly on paper. Stuff like that doesn't affect PEMDAS. If written correctly, it's clear that 3x is still considered the whole exponent and that you have to solve for it before you can move on. Once OP gets into pre-algebra, it will become more clearer for him too.

PEMDA? What happened to BIDMAS?

Name: Anonymous 2008-11-22 16:52

>>19

I've never heard of that. Maybe PEMDAS is the newer way. Just like how SOH, CAH, TOA, CHA, SHO, CAO replaced the x,y,r combos.

shouldn't the answer be 1000 - 10 = 990?  The place value of the first 4 is the thousands place, not the fourthousands place.  I always took the phrase to mean a power of 10 associated with the position.

cosec = 1/sin, so shouldn't the latter ones be SHA, CHO, CAO?

Name: Anonymous 2008-11-22 23:12

Whoops, you're absolutely right.

Don't change these.
