Evolutionary Progressivism

wut is evolutionary progressivism as portrayed by Darwin in "The Origin of Species" and "The Descent of Man" and why is it right wrong?
I get the impression that the concept does not really work in the real world, because species don't increase in complexity / "perfection", but I dunno the specifics of how Darwin would have portrayed or explained it and if his views are now largely considered defunct.

When's the last time you posted?  I don't remember either of you for some reason.

So, is this some sort of history of science/philosophy/creationist class?  Standard biology classes usually just tell you what is known/accepted to be true, rather than ask you to read ancient books and interpret them or something.  Similarly, I don't think there's much to learn from reading 1880s literature on the luminiferous aether.
