does .999999999999.... = 1?

My asshole friend keeps trying to tell me that .9999999... = 1

So, what's your take?

This question keeps popping up because it genuinely trips people up... people that don't read this board.

So why isn't it true that 9x(1/9) = 9x(0.111...) = 0.999... = 1 ?
But it is true.
