Learn the names of symbols of advanced math

Name: Grey 2008-03-26 16:59

Hey /sci/

I on a Game-Programming school and they teached us some necessary math needed in (2D) games like Sine and the likes. But i didn't remember everything they said, so i started reading some wikipedia pages, but they start 'throwing' with symbols that look like a Z or a 0 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sine for example)

my question is: does /sci/ has a nice webpage where they explain what all those symbols mean? This way i can help myself further on.

KTHXBYE

DIFFICULT

(The one that looks like a Z is, in fact, the number two.)

i think he's talking about the integer set Z.

I'm shit with greek letters. I always call get psi and phi and omega mixed up. It's shitty.

alpha, beta, gamma, delta, epsilon, zeta, eta, theta, iota, kappa, lambda, mu, nu, xi, omicron, pi, rho, sigma, tau, upsilon, phi, chi, psi, omega.  24 proper letters in two cases, degenerate characters include digamma (looks like an F) and sampi.

It pays to know it cold.

We're about to do contour integration so I'm about to find out what the fuck is up with that integral sign with the circle through the middle (I know it's integrating around regions of the plane or some shit, but still).

Every branch of math has its own ad hoc symbols, and the only way to learn a language is to read, speak, and write it, over and over.

So true, so true. It's not really necessary to learn the Greek alphabet in order, really, but if you call angular velocity "w" instead of "omega," you're going to look like a retard in front of people who know what they're talking about.

Ah, fuck, that's apparently not how you do quotes.

Great.

Now I look like a retard in front of people who know what they're talking about.

I don't think there is a way to do quotes on this forum.

I've seen it before, though. It indents the line and highlights it on mouseover.

Looks like I phail.  Nothing is highlighted on mouseover though.

What browser are you using?  I have firefox and IE, but neither highlights on mouseover.

It's reasonably subtle. Turn your brightness down.

Dunno what to say. It's very, very faint. I almost never noticed that these things existed until I saw one flicker on an accidental mouseover.

Woo. I learned that by myself when I was 17, but I guess you will learn it `better' or some shit like that.

not OP here
I learn by myself too and I agree it's the best.
However, OP isn't just some moron, proof is he tries to learn by googling & searching.
Not all students do that shit, so give him a break.

BE THAT AS IT MAY
IT IS STILL REGRETTABLE
THAT SUCH A MIND
MAY BE WASTED
IN LOW PRODUCTIVITY LEARNING
AT A GAME-DESIGN COLLEGE
WHEN THE MATERIAL COULD JUST AS EASILY
BE LEARNED ON ONE'S OWN
AND LIKELY TO GREATER EFFECT.

Who are you to judge?....

Maybe you didn't hear me....

WHO THE FUCK ARE YOU TO JUDGE ANYONE??!!

Name: Anonymous 2008-03-31 10:27

>>32
I WASN'T ACTUALLY JUDGING A PERSON
SO MUCH AS I WAS JUDGING
IN GENERAL
THE USEFULNESS OF A DEGREE
AND ITS ASSOCIATED PROGRAM
RELATIVE TO LEARNING THE MATERIAL
ON ONE'S OWN
OR THROUGH SOME OTHER MEANS.
PERHAPS YOU SHOULD READ AGAIN
AND NOTE THAT I ALLOW THE POSSIBILITY
THAT THIS PERSON IS
IN FACT
NOT A MORON,
OR YOU MAY WANT TO CONSIDER
CHANGING YOUR ASSERTION
AS YOUR CURRENT ONE
IS INACCURATE.

Cruise control etc.

Anyway, was the question just about the greek letters? They're just used to show a variable, it's even marked on the drawing, so in general if you don't recognize a symbol assume it's a variable, and look for a drawing to explain it as such.
Don't know if that's the best advice, but it's at least some.

OP, HOW THE FUCK DO YOU NOT KNOW WHAT THOSE SYMBOLS MEAN? DID YOU GO TO HIGH SCHOOL?
WAIT, NEVERMIND THAT, I KNEW WHAT THOSE SYMBOLS MEANT IN MIDDLE SCHOOL.
ALSO, FUCK GAME PROGRAMMING SCHOOL? I LIKE THE VIDYA, AND THERE'S NO WAY IN HELL I'D GO TO A PLACE LIKE THAT.

Don't change these.
