Can one hate evil if hatred itself is evil?

Name: RedCream 2008-03-13 18:43

Since the definition changes from era to era and person to person, you're not asking a question that has any relevance whatsoever.  Go and do something useful for a fucking change.  NAO.

War, bigotry, paranoia, lots of things occur from reasoning that the target is evil.  Even Hitler thought he was doing the world good.

People know when they're doing evil.

Name: Anonymous 2008-03-13 21:56

No, not all people do

Yes, one can always hate. The argument you're attempting to make is essentially that it is hypocritical or, perhaps, counter productive to apply evil against evil. Regardless, one can always do it. You should have rephrased your question.

By definition, they do. Otherwise it's not evil, just unfortunate.

What the fuck is evil? It's not a substance, it's not found on the periodic table of elements, it's  not a known physical particle or atom or compound or solution or lifeform. Evil doesn't exist, evil itself is the illusion.

Evil is that which is unfair, which harms, which is unjust. It is not an opinion, it is universal.

Unfair in whose eyes? Harmful in whose eyes? Unjust in whose eyes?
Evil is certainly an opinion.

cry harder libfags, evil is defined in the dictionary and is as real as ever other observation that has facts to back it up

do you believe it is a substance or an energy or field or what

Cry harder, dupefag.  "God", "dragon" and other NON-EXISTENT things are also defined in the dictionary.  Therefore, a dictionary entry is insufficient as sole proof of anything, much less EXISTENCE.

Evil is just a sentiment held by a shifting fraction of Humanity.  That's IT.  There are no FACTS that say that evil actually exists outside of ever-changing Human sentiment.

DUPEFAG PWNT!

Evil is an abstract concept.
If you don't understand the semantics of the word, that is fine.
Get a new dictionary and please shut up for the rest of us that know what evil means.
Do you also argue that there is no such thing as blue or white?
Because not everyone sees the same colors.
Ofcourse that is quite incorrect; Blue *does* exist, as an abstract concept. In reality it might be just some reactions in a human brain (and other brains) or something else. We just name that something as blue. there.
As we name evil.

   1.  Morally bad or wrong; wicked: an evil tyrant.
   2. Causing ruin, injury, or pain; harmful: the evil effects of a poor diet.
   3. Characterized by or indicating future misfortune; ominous: evil omens.
   4. Bad or blameworthy by report; infamous: an evil reputation.
   5. Characterized by anger or spite; malicious: an evil temper.

Evil is an abstract concept.
Yes, I agree.  Therefore it has no real existence, and can change as Humans change their minds about such things.  This was my original point and you've just confirmed it.  Therefore we're not even arguing, since the facts as I gave them are NOT IN DISPUTE.

Stop saying "evil is an opinion" to justify going out gambling, seeing prostitutes, and doing illegal drugs.

Name: RedCream 2008-03-17 0:52

Evil IS an opinion.

If gambling is evil, then your own government allows it.  Fuck, it makes a MONOPOLY of it.

Men have seen prostitutes over millennia and many cultures.  Obviously, there is no absolute rule against it that the universe is involved with.

And drugs are illegal on a whim.  Alcohol is far more destructive, for example, yet it's legal.  And you'd have to really outline how some hippie doing marijuana in his own home is somehow an evil act (other than your opinion, which was my statement in the first place).

Well that's hardly what most of us here are like.  The guys into illegal shit or otherwise bulldozing themselves through other people's lives are the way they are and that's that.  Those types of guys rarely are the introspective type that decide how to behave based upon philosophising.  They just do it.

Good luck making the case gambling, prostitution, and drugs are ``evil''. I don't think you can.

Yes, one can definitely hate evil.

Hate is based on emotion and hating evil is really hating ignorance. But don't waste emotions on ignorance because what happens then may just be invoking dualism in your head. A paradoxal state of mind, so to speak.

A paradox is often easily broken by realizing that it is a parallell without a bridge of understanding.

So hating evil makes you good as long as you do not devote your life to it. THAT would be a waste of time.

Ignorance is the bane of society. Help me! Help you!

Hold on, Tom Cruise is at my door. Sextiemz, perhaps?

How is hating evil the same as hating ignorance? A serial killer for example is considered evil but his actions aren't guided by ignorance.

Don't change these.
