Need help with a basic math problem

Name: Anonymous 2008-02-05 13:32

Yeah, I'm almost out of college, but for the life of me I can't figure out this simple problem.

(11*sqrt(x)+2)*2x.  And that somehow simplifies to, 22x^3/2 + 4x.

Where the hell did that x^3/2 come from?  Are you multiplying the square root by 1/2 to get rid of it, then multiplying the numerator by 2?

sqrt(x) can be rewritten as x^(1/2). x * x^(1/2) = x^(1 + 1/2) = x^(3/2).

I hope to god you're an English major.

I am, and thank you.

And actually, re-reading my original post, I feel pretty embarrassed.  The solution I originally had doesn't make any kind of sense at all.

Don't change these.
