Do you have any dogs?  If so, take a good look at him.  ALL modern dogs originated from wolves, coyotes, and the like.  This was done through selective breeding to root out all the aspects you see now.  This may be an accelerated process, but it is the exact same process that has been shown to occur in nature.  The trait that allows the species to reproduce the most becomes dominant.  Say, a dog trainer has two dogs.  One has short hair, the other long; he only likes short hair.  Naturally, the long-haired dog won't be bred, and so the short haired dog will reproduce more, and become more dominant.  This happens in nature as well.  One trait allows a species to obtain more food, and so the organisms with that trait will have a higher survival rate, and so produce more offspring.  This means all those offspring will have that trait, and not the other.  This has been Krieger, your guide to all thing obvious.
