How Do I Shot Positive Sollution?

A steel block of mass m hangs from a vertical spring whose other end is attached to the underside of a horizontal beam. Air resistance is negligible, and the block vibrates with period 3 seconds (time for the motion to repeat itself). When an iron block of mass 4kg is attached to the steel block, the motion becomes periodic of period 5 seconds. Find
(a) the spring constant (Hooke’s constant)
(b) the mass m of the steel block.

T = 2pi*sqrt(M/K)

3 = 2pi*sqrt(M/K)
5 = 2pi*sqrt((M+4)/k)

Two equations, two unknowns.  Solve it.

is that year 12 wook or 1st year uni? or year 11?

Name: Anonymous 2007-10-24 16:53

i'd go with first year uni because hookes constant is barely talked about at year 12/13

actually we did hooks law in yr 12 but only in physics, not much in math...but this yr 1st yr uni were doing springs and ODEs in maths and :(
