learning by not getting taught anything

Back in May 2000, the public radio program Einstein-A-Go-Go raised the argument of whether students should be taught or conversely just left to educate themselves.

Apparently, there is a considerable body of opinion that believes students should just be told what to read, and then left to their own devices to teach themselves. This way, the students find their own level. The best will thrive, and the rest should fall by the wayside. (I have heard this technique referred to as "Immersion" on one occasion.) This is probably in the best traditions of Economic Rationalism.

This troubles me. Since I was a young nigger, getting up early in the morning to watch Julius Sumner Miller on The International Summer Science School, the value of a teacher that teaches seemed to be self-evident.

That idea will never catch on, mostly because it's stupid.

1)Like you said, very few people have the motivation to teach themselves everything they need to know.  For instance, even nerds like us, who would probably enjoy teaching ourselves math/science would barely skim past literature and English.

2) Teaching oneself is a lot less efficient.  I remember I had some medical problems my junior year of high school, and I missed a month and a half of school.  To catch up the school got me a tutor and I was basically home schooled.

The problem was though, my classes were pretty difficult (AP Chem, Calculus etc) and my tutor was completely useless.  I was left to teach myself these subjects with zero guidance or instruction.  Needless to say it was exceedingly difficult.

3) Part of education is learning to work with other people.  Classrooms teach life skills as well as necessary knowledge

its possible to learn life skills by isolating yourself for a few months and thinking

I'd like to give those people a smack in the face.

Even the smartest people can suffer from lack of motivation.

Most students don't know anything anyway after being "taught". Won't make a difference.

As you might know, Gilgamesh is my wife in real life and has placed a significant amount of work into the guild and people are likely to respond why not give it to her. The primary reason is I intend to gkick her from the guild when I return home from work tonight.

As it turns out playing wow isn't the only thing she likes to do in her free time. I hear that she is often very friendly over ventrilo...very friendly.

With that said, I have decided not to disband the guild- the guild deserves to live on. I would like to just give it away....for free. Website, DKP, everything.

Whats the catch?

Simple really, I need some information. I want to know EVERYTHING. Considering Gilgamesh doesnt work, and I pay for everything, I have access to everything. Name your virtual price.

Visit http://www.dirtysonsofliches.com/ for my contact information.

Thank you very much and happy hunting.
