First off, just to lay it on the table, people have different ideas about what god/gods is/are. A person's idea of god is not necessarily restricted to the same domain as a juicy tomato, a god can be metaphysical like the concept of the wheel.
Concepts can only be judged by their effects, you assume wheels are solid circular objects and they roll because those are the properties of the wheel, when you see a solid circular object roll it validates the wheel. In the same way you assume a person who truly believes in a particular god will devote themselves to ending as much sufferring as possble in their lives, give or take a few mistakes and sins, when this happens it validates god.
Some people believe their god wants them to kill unbelievers or obey religious leaders unquestioningly. Then again the wheel can be used to run people over aswell as make it cheaper and easier to transport delicious tomatos.
