What can you contribute back to society studying African History? Not much. A few might write a poignant book about it, but most will end up selling cell phones and managing fast food restaurants.

African studies is as important as history class, because that's what it is. Physics is universal, as Africa and Europe, surprisingly, exist in the same universe and obey the same physical laws.
I suppose it matters WHY you want to study it. If it's meant as a circle jerk class (woman's studies are), then it's a pointless fluff class designed to raise GPAs and give students PC points. This is NOT a legitamate reason to take a course IMO, and it tends to dumb down the course. I suspect that most AS courses are just like WS courses -- circle jerk classes that do very little "study". They sit around and talk and do little dinky "projects" (mostly artistic in nature), watch Malcolm X and Roots, and get an easy A whilst convincing themselves that they're enlightened. What they get is probably equivilent to the 2nd grader's version of US History -- dumbed down and sanitized so that there's always a clearly defined *bad guy* and the leaders of Africa are always saints.
If you're a history major, it's important to know ALL of history, not just Europe and East Asia. Africa is a big complex place. What's true in the Sahara isn't true in South Africa or the Congo jungles. History is always complex. I want to learn more about African history, but I wouldn't touch "African Studies" because I want the whole picture, warts and all.
africa studies is a course designed for brainwashing people into thinking that it's ok for niggers to be lazy, and leech off of everyone else, while not working, and fucking reproducing like rabbits(if not faster). and if the class isn't about that, it's about why it's ethical for whatever country the university(i'm assuming it's a university) is in to go and invade different african countries to "help" them from themselves.
